Little Shop of Physics

February 24, 2007
10 AM - 6 PM
Lory Student Center ballrooms on the Colorado State University Campus

Kids and adults will all marvel at over 200 hands-on science experiments at this fun and informative Open House at the Little Shop of Physics.  You won’t find yourself sitting around listening to a lecture — you’ll observe, question, experiment, and DO science.

The theme of this year’s event is “It’s Up in the Air“, with an emphasis on the atmosphere.  You will be able to:

  • Discover how the Earth’s magnetic field works
  • Experience a tornado forming
  • See the shape of air and wind
  • and much more…

In addition to the hundreds of hands-on experiments, you can also visit the interactive presentations.  Some will be messy, some will be loud, and all will be educational.  A sampling:

  • Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream (we need your help on this one!!)
  • The Million-Volt Tesla Coil. If you haven’t seen the three foot sparks thrown from the top of this bad boy (safely, of course) then you have never truly lived!!
  • Beyond the Rainbow: What’s really there, anyway?
  • and many surprises…

New this year:

  • Wiggly Goo Frogs
  • Pointing Polar
  • Convection Currents
  • and dozens more!

Not only is the Open House free, even the parking is free!

Denver Kids Expo (Denver)

    Denver Kids ExpoDeep snow

January 27, 2007
10 AM – 7 PM

Has all the snow and cold got you and the kids suffering from cabin fever?  Head over to Denver Merchandise Mart for hours of entertaining activities for the little ones, and some parenting resource info for the adults at the Denver Kids Expo.

Unfortunately, the “free” admission only applies to children under 12 and (perhaps) the grandparents, assuming they are 65 or over.  Everyone in between has to pay $8 admission.  Parking is free — apparently no matter what the age of the driver!

Meanwhile, back at the expo, kids can jump and slide and climb and draw, play with furry animals and swimming animals, and learn about hula dancing and karate.  And just when you thought you could sit back and just watch, your child might try to enter you in the “TP Mom or Dad” event, or challenge you to the diaper changing race.  Look out!

With all that, you “big kids” will probably want to pick up some information on nannies, preschool, and summer camp, not to mention college planning, and health and wellness brochures.  Especially the health and wellness brochures!

    Snowshoe tracks

Thursdays (all winter)
10 AM – 1 PM

Fish Creek Canyon is a beautiful place to explore in the winter.  Yampatika and the USFS partner up to offer a great snowshoeing experience with spectacular views, opportunities to learn about the animal tracks and trees, and the chance to slow down and enjoy a true “winter wonderland.”

Bring water and a snack, dress in layers, and wear shoes that will keep your feet warm and dry.  If you have your own snowshoes, bring them (of course!).  If not, you can rent snowshoes for $5.

Call (970) 871-9151 for more information and to reserve a spot for yourself on one of these weekly outings.
