Hardrock 100 (Silverton-Ophir-Telluride-Ouray-Sherman-Silverton)
100 miles. Running. Well, a lot more than just running.
From Silverton, these amazing athletes run over 13 passes (situated at up to 13,000′ elevation), do some rock scrambling, wade streams, scurry along the edge of steep drop-offs, cross the Continental Divide a few times, go over the summit of Handies Peak (14,048′), negotiate snow-filled gulleys, claw their way up mine dumpings (see below*), pull themselves hand-over-hand up a roped section of “trail” (oh boy — only 33 miles left to go!), glissade down more snow (if they’re lucky), and on and on.
The race is already underway as of this writing, but you can go cheer on those still on their feet, and congratulate those who have had enough for getting as far as they did. You can still watch for runners in Ouray, Telluride, and Silverton.

* Here’s a quote from the detailed course description:
We have had one occasion where it was so full of snow and ice that steps had to be cut for the route. When dry, the mine dumps are extremely hard and due to the steepness offer very little traction.
