Colorado Balloon Classic (Colorado Springs)

posted Wednesday July 19, 2006

September 2 -4, 2006

There’s something truly magical about watching 90 hot-air balloons rising above a lake in a beautiful setting.  Celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of Colorado’s biggest balloon events at Memorial Park off Pikes Peak Avenue between Hancock Ave. and Union Blvd. by the shores of Prospect Lake.

Get up early to watch the mass ascension on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.  There will be free entertainment following “lift off” in the mornings, and a concert on Saturday and Sunday evenings before the Balloon Glo®.

There will also be concession stands, children’s activities, and even balloon rides (although we can’t confirm that they will be free).

Oh, and did you know that a sheep, a duck, and a rooster were the first hot air balloon passengers back in 1783?  Or that the average balloon stands 8 – 10 stories high?

One more thing — all you balloonists out there probably know this one by heart, but for the rest of us:

“Balloonist’s Prayer”
The winds have welcomed you with softness
The sun has held you in his warm hands
You have flown so high and so well
That God has joined you in your laughter
And set you gently back down
Into the loving arms of Mother Earth.
