Fresh Grown in Colorado – harvest festivals & winery tours
Late summer is harvest time for many of Colorado’s great fruits & vegetables, and a number of communities celebrate the harvest with a festival. Sometimes the festivals charge a fee to attend, but even so, there are often some free “perks” that happen in conjunction with the main events. Let’s check out a few!

Mmmm, Colorado Peaches! Palisade celebrates the peach harvest with the Palisade Peach Fest, which charges a fee to attend. However, there are several free Orchard & Farm Tours going on during the festival.  Tour “benefits†include a free glass of cider, letting you pick a free peach in the orchard, a wagon ride through the orchards, and a coffee-tasting tour.Â
Most of these tours are available Friday, August 18, 2006. Check the Palisade Peach Fest schedule for details.

Wait — we’re not done with Palisade yet! For you wine lovers, mark your calendars for Sunday, September 17 from 10 AM to 5 PM. During the Colorado Mountain Winefest, many local wineries invite you to tour vinyard country, enjoying winery tours, sampling the wines, witnessing the art of winemaking, and being entertained while munching on appetizers.

Watermelon, anyone? Folks in Colorado know that Rocky Ford is the place to go for great melons — we look forward to cantaloupe & watermelon from this region with great anticipation! If you love melons, don’t miss the Arkansas Valley Fair from August 23 – 27. Admission is free, there are plenty of special events for kids, and — YES! — there is free watermelon!

OK, just one more for now. The Crested Butte Wild Mushroom Festival is another festival where there is a charge for the main events, but there is still something free available. On Thursday, August 17, from 7 – 9:30 PM, watch a slide presentation on edible and other mushrooms commonly found in the Crested Butte area. This event is free and open to the public.
